Though there are many modes of travel to Shimla from various parts of India to Shimla, the quickest way to reach Shimla is to take a flight from New Delhi. Shimla has its Airport in a place called Jubbarhatti, which is about 23 kilometers from the heart of Shimla city. While the runway is sufficient for the plane with a load full of passengers of the Airbus type planes to safely land at the Ridge Top airport at Jubbarhatti, but it is not sufficient for a load full Airbus type planes to take off. That is the reason why only smaller planes like Turbo Prop and Dornier planes service this Airport. Located at an altitude of 5065 feet, the runway is only 3800 feet in length, and that renders it short for providing landing and take-off services for larger planes.

An airport authority of India source disclosed that depending upon the weather conditions, the number of passengers on a Shimla – Delhi flight could be curtailed to 20 to 24 as the presently prevailing warm days reduce necessary air pressure required for take-off of heavier loaded planes.

Having said so, the Delhi – Shimla – Delhi Sector is a sector, which has peak demand for flights at any part of the time of the year.

There are two airlines that operate in this sector and they are Kingfisher Airlines, and Jagson Airlines. However only Kingfisher Airlines operates flights operate on a daily basis. Jagson Airlines have flights from Delhi to Shimla & Shimla to Delhi on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The schedules of both the Airlines are underneath.
