Southern Railway

Southern Railway is the first and oldest railway zones of the Indian Railways from its sixteen present zones. The Southern India railway came into existence on 14th April 1951 covering 9,654 route kms. Three state railways of that time namely Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway, and the Mysore state railway were merged to form this entity.

As the name suggests Southern Railway’s present network extends over a large area of Southern India covering the states of Kerala, Tamilnadu, Pondicherry, and some parts of Andhra Pradesh.. The Southern Railways extends from Mangalore on the west, Kanniyakumari in the south to Renigunta in the North West and Gudur in the North East.

The Southern Railway is headquartered at Chennai, the capital of  Tamil Naidu and comprises of the following six divisions.

Salem is the newest division if the Southern Railways

Nearly about 600 million passengers commute annually on the southern railway network.

Given the high volumes of traffic that is carried on the Railway, efforts are continuing in capacity expansion works such as dual rail tracks and meter to broad gauge conversion.

In the field of IT, Southern Railway is the first to complete networking of all its terminals through freight operations information system (FOIS) opening new horizons in freight operation management.

Today Southern railway manages 195 mail/express trains daily 557 suburban trains and 275 passenger train services daily and has more than 5000 coaches and more than 10000 wagons in its kitty.
