We saw the echo point, Mattupetty dam, halted for some time at the Kundala lake which we liked the most and children enjoyed a lot. Kundala Lake is located at 28 km away from Munnar amidst a dense forest. A narrow road bifurcates to the left to reach this place. The main road on the top of the dam offers a panoramic view of the catchment area of the Kundala Dam. Kundala lake and its surrounding area offer a calm and quiet atmosphere with quiet natural beauty. Huge oak trees around the lake were magnificent. There was level area around the lake bank for children to play. Several boats were parked there but at that moment boating has yet not started.

Boating at Periyar lake We started our day at 6:30 Am getting ready for the boating at Periyar lake in the 7:00 AM – 9:00 AM slot organized by KTDC. Boat rides offered on the Periyar lake provides the best chance of observing wild life in the sanctuary. On the second day from Kumarakom we started our journey towards Thekkady a hill station at around 10:00 in the morning. The distance was about 100-120 Kilometers and being a hill area the tentative travel time was 4-5 hours. After about an hours journey we passed through a major town of Kerala called Kottayam the rubber city. Kerala accounts for 90% of the Rubber production in India, major part being the contribution of Kottayam district.

The houseboat is perhaps the most exciting tourism product of the state of Kerala in India which is popular the world over as ‘God’s own country’. A houseboat usually have one or two bath attached air conditioned bed rooms, an open lounge, deck kitchenette and a crew comprising oarsmen, a cook and a guide. The houseboat that we reserved for the cruise had the above amenities. There are even four and five bed room houseboats.

We planned a holiday trip to Kerala in February this year along with our kids aged 3 and 6 years. This was our maiden trip to Kerala and we have not visited this state before. After searching the best options on the internet we planned a 4N / 5D trip to Kerala. For the for nights we planned to stay two nights at Munnar, one Thekkady and one in a house boat in Kumarakom in the Kerala backwaters.
